Vimortalis Elixir - Background, Ingredients and Procedure

Background
Vimortalis Elixir is a brew forbidden by the Ministry of Magic bar for exenuating circumstances, which require definite, physical proof in order to get the clearance for its brewing; failing to do so can result in strict, and heavy, Ministry fines. Despite its rather simplistic ingredients, it is classified as a poison, the only one of its kind that is taken straight and doesn't require a bezoar to be used at all.

It is taken by people who are half vampire, or have active vampire traits, to suppress the full change, since vampire traits will make themselves dominant and change the person. It must be taken before the changes start or at the immediate onset of them, which typically occur in puberty, in order for it to be effective. Once a person has stopped taking it, the changes occur at a much more rapid and painful rate. Should they survive the change, they can never take the elixir again, since - due to the garlic, Morning Glory flowers, Somner's Fog and Flameweed root - the poison will rapidly travel through the bloodstream, bringing death in a matter of seconds like all other poisons.

Nightshade flowers *whole, unbroken* [15] {25}

Procedure

1. Heat the cauldron to a very high temperature and sear the Morning Glory flowers until they are singeing around the edges. If fresh, they should give off a small clear liquid that does not start to boil once in contact with the surface of the cauldron.

2. Add in the slivered Flameroot at once. A large gout of flame should burst upwards momentarily. Once subsided, there should be small amounts of steam issuing forth from the liquid's surface and the cauldron should now possess a four inches of orange-yellow liquid on the bottom, with chunks of Flameweed floating it in. Sitr this until the Flameweed has cooked completely.

3. Drop in the chopped asphodel gently. This should make the elixir a dark burnt orange colour. ASPHODEL CAN REACT STRONGLY WITH FLAMEWEED AND BECOME A HIGHLY CORROSIVE SUBSTANCE THAT CAUSES SEVERE BURNS ON SKIN. Take a magical stirrer and briskly stir the elixir counterclockwise nine times before stirring clockwise for eighteen times. Then leave it to stew under a slow heat for a full twenty four hours. The elixir may be left unattended at this point.

4. Once the twenty four hours is up, pour in the Draught of Living Death slowly but steadily. It should be darkening to a dark red colour now. Take it off the fire and allow it to cool for forty five minutes. Place it back on the fire again and bring it to a full boil quickly.

5. Once the elixir is boiling rapidly, add in the infusion of wormwood. A foul, pungent odour should rise after a few minutes, along with a small black cloud. Allow the elixir to simmer gently at a low temprature for another full twenty four hours.

6. When twenty four hours have elasped, take the holly berries and add them in two batches. ENSURE THAT THE HOLLY BERRIES ARE PITTED AS THE PITS ACT AS A PURGATIVE WHICH WILL REACT STRONGLY WITH THE HALEVINE AND BRING IMMEDIATE RETCHING OF THE POTION INSTEAD OF CONTROL. Once they are fully cooked and squish when prodded, bring the elixir to a gentle boil for fifteen minutes.

7. Sprinkle in the garlic powder quickly, while stirring in a triangular fashion. A sharp garlicky odour should be emitting from the elixir now, and the colour should be reddish-blue, not purple. If it's purple, more Draught of Living Death must be added - approximately 20 mL more.

8. Bring the elixir to a simmer and then dump in the ground halevine at once, and do not stir it in. It should all clump together and sink to the bottom of the cauldron. The surface should bubble rapidly and a strange keening sound will be emitted from the elixir now for a duration of one minute. Once that sound ends give the cauldron four strong stirs counterclockwise, then eight gentle stirs clockwise and then twelve brisk stirs counterclockwise. If performed correctly, the elixir should now be a dark purple colour, with a thick consistency much like oatmeal. If not, the elixir is now useless and the entire process up to this point must be repeated fresh.

9. Place the lumbutra shoots upright in the cauldron. They should stand upright due to the elixir's thickness. At this point, the elixir can again be left unattended for a full twenty four hours.

10. When you come back, the elixir should be a light violet colour and have a spicy scent to it. Take it off the heat and add one half of the minced fluxweed before adding in the other half. The surface of the potion should roil violently. Add in the other half of the fluxweed.

11. The elixir should look as if it is about to bubble over. Immediately add in all of the crushed strawberry seeds. The elixir should settle down immediately and have a much thinner consistency. Take the elixir off the flames and allow it to cool down for twelve hours.

12. Once you come back, the elixir should have a gelled apperance, much like a gelatin dessert. Bring it to a gentle simmer. Then add in the sunflower buds one at a time in two minute intervals. If done correctly, the potion should now be a bright red orange-yellow colour.

13.Allow the elixr to bubble gently for a hour before putting in the chopped daisy roots. The level of the potion in the caudron should decrease after a few minutes of boiling. At this point, leav it for eleven hours on a gentle boil. It might be wise to set a self regulating fire so the potion does not become too hot and overboil.

14. When the potion is done after the eleven hours, there should be a concentrated amount sitting in the bottom of the cauldron, approximately two and a half inches. Take the litre and a half of leech juice and pour it in. There should be a very loud hissing noise as well as some popping sounds. Leave this to boil while preparing the next part for the potion

15. Take the Somner's Fog and pour the Soothing Potion into it. The resulting mixture should be light blue in colour and swirling of its own accord. Take the wild cherry pits and add them in. Slight jets of steam should be emitting from the potion now, and it should turn a light blue- white. The steam will disappear after a few minutes. Stir until all the colour has been leeched from the cherry pits and they are pure white. Remove them.

16. Pour this into the main elixir. There should a rather wet sound when you pour it in. The elixir should now be reddish orange yet again. Take the shredded black willow leaves and spriknle them in with a circular motion. The elixir should turn a black and have no sort of reflection upon the surface.

17. Take the whole skullcap plant, ensuring that the roots are the pale yellow colour that indicates ity being picked during the waning cresent of the moon. After ensuring that there is no dirt on the plant, slowly, push it to the bottom of the cauldron with the stirrer.

18. Take the diced valerian root and add it in slowly, per tablespoon. DO NOT ADD IT ALL AT ONCE FOR IT CAN REACT WITH SKULLCAP AND CAUSE THE POTION TO SWELL AT A RAPID RATE, MORE THAN LIKELY SPILLING OVER THE CAULDRON. SHOULD THIS COME INTO CONTACT WITH HUMAN SKIN, IT WILL CAUSE LARGE PAINFUL WELTS THAT ARE EXTREMELY DIFFUCULT TO REMOVE AS THE REQUIRED POTION CAN TAKE UP TO TWO MONTHS TO PREPARE. The elixir should turn a light beige colour at this point. Allow it to sit for a full twenty four hours.

19. When the twenty four hours are up, the potion should be a darker beige colour, bordering on brown. Take the Antipodean Opaleye dragon eggshells and add them in whole. The elixir should immediately turn a bright fiery red colour and start bubbling rapidly..

20. Take the stewed horned slugs and chop them up roughly into quarter inch cubes before adding them into the elixir. The bubbling should die down a bit and the fierce red colour should subdue a bit. Allow the elixir to simmer at a low temperature for twenty four hours

21. Once, the twenty four hours are up, bring the elixir to a full boil. Take the chopped mandrake and mix it up with crushed snake fangs with a mortar and pestle. It should give off a sharp, pungent odour. The mixture should have a blackish appearance with brown bits mixed in. Scrape this into elixir, which should turn a fiery red colour once more. Allow it to boil rapidly for an hour.

22. Take the Nightshade flowers and sear them, much like the Morning Glory flowers in a seperate cauldron. The petals should be singed and a smal amount of liquid resting in the bottom of the cauldron. Pour this all into the elixir.

23. The elixir should take on a much more watery consistency and turn a deep blood red colour. Allow it to boil for twenty minute before bottling it in a large vial.

24. This should be given to the person immediately to drink, as it will lose it potency the longer it remains uningested. Should a full twenty four hours elaspe, the potion will be useless and a new one will need to be brewed.
