Cruoris Potion – Background, Ingredients, Procedure

Background
The Cruoris potion is a relatively new poison, having only been in existence for almost 20 years. While the maker of the formula is unknown, it is something that is rarely used due to some of the more elusive ingredients it requires are defined as Class A Non-Tradeable Goods, extremely rare/scarce or is in a highly limited and controlled supply. The potion is rarely used due to the difficulty needed to simply obtain the items, much less brewing it. As this poison is so rarely used, its specific usage is not clearly defined by the Ministry for Magic; indeed, its very existence may not be known at all. Depending on how it’s brewed it can take mere hours to take effect or even a full year.

Note
By the term donor, it specifically refers to the wizard who is giving their blood to be used the potion.

Should this potion be used on a family member, it may be something of a wild card. Since the blood types may not match up, there is no guarantee that the potion will work. It may have some degree of efficacy, but may elicit nothing at all.

This potion is geared towards a much more specific usage; to undermine a wizard that has used another wizard’s blood in potion/ritual that required immersion or even ingestion. This is because blood, as a very powerful potion ingredient, would have soaked into the skin (when speaking of immersion) epidermically or become part of the other wizard’s body itself (when speaking of ingestion). In 99 percent of those cases, the absorbed/ingested blood actually changed the recipient wizard’s blood type to that of the donor’s. This is what makes this potion particularly successful. This potion provides an efficient way to undermine the offending wizard’s ill gained abilities.

Many of the additional paraphernalia required can be ordered through your local apothecary shop. Should they not be able to procure some of the items via that means, send an owl to Potare’s Healer Shop in Diagon Alley, specifically to the attention of the Muggle Medical Supplies Department; they stock a wide range of Muggle medical supplies for healers interested in Muggle methods of medicine. Be sure to include your Healer credentials as they do not sell to the public.

Procedure

Week One

Day One

1. Ensure that the room the potion will be brewed in stays at a constant temperature of 5°. Should a temperature fluctuation cause a rise or fall of even a degree, the potion will be ruined. The best charm to ensure a steady, consistent temperature is the Regula Temperatura charm – it automatically regulates the climate of the room to maintain the 5° required.

2. While there are charms to obtain the blood from a person, it may be easier to use a Muggle syringe to draw out the blood. Most wizards find them themselves a bit apprehensive about blood being removed from them in a magical manner. As well, many of the charms for that remove the blood quite abruptly, causing something of shock to the system if it is a large amount in one go. A Muggle syringe prevents this from occurring and draws blood just as effectively while the wizard can see that you are indeed taking only the amount of blood you indicated that you would be taking. While the recommended amount of blood for this stage of the potion is 160 mL, using more, raises the strength of it by each 160 mL. i.e. 320 mL = 2x stronger, 480 = 3x stronger, etc.

Drawing blood with a Muggle syringe

  1. Roll up the donor’s sleeve until it rests just below their shoulder.
  2. Take a liquid iodine swab vial and shake vigorously to break the seal inside and soak the swab end in iodine. Thoroughly swab the crook of the elbow in order to insure any foreign bacteria have been eliminated.
  3. Use a blood pressure arm cuff or a tourniquet. If using a blood pressure arm cuff, simply wrap it around the donor’s arm and pump until a sufficient reading can be obtained. If using a tourniquet, tie it tightly just above the elbow.
  4. Once one of these has been done, give the donor a ball of paper, rags, etc. to squeeze. Have them squeeze until a large vein has been raised in the crook of their arm.
  5. Take a sterile syringe and ensure that the plunger is completely down. Accidentally injecting air into the donor’ blood system can, and almost always, cause a fatal air embolism. Once ensuring that, insert the needle into the vein very carefully. Pushing it in too far can cause it to pass right through and possibly cause some internal bleeding.
  6. Once in, pull the plunger back until the desired amount has been obtained. Be sure to keep the needle as still as absolutely possible while drawing the blood. Tearing a vein can cause a great amount of pain and is fairly difficult to repair.
  7. Pull the needle out and firmly place a bit of gauze on top of the spot while placing syringe in a safe place. Veins can bleed quite a bit and need a good amount of pressure in order to stop the blood flow. Tape the gauze in place and remove the tourniquet.

3. Once the 80 mL of the donor’s blood has been drawn, pour it into a container and mix in 10 of the scarletina buds and 37.5 mL of the adrenaline. Using a folding motion to mix in the ingredients, continue this until the scarletina buds have softened up. If mixed properly, the resulting mixture should be acid green in colour, pungent and roiling slightly of its own accord. Seal the container and leave it for 48 hours.

4. Take one the belladonna roots and mix in with 2.5 henbane leaves. Pour off 12.5 mL of Charon’s Tisane into a container and add in the root and leaves. Leave it to steep for 48 hours.

5. Heat up another cauldron to a searing heat and add in two belladonna roots. Wait until the roots turn a slight black before adding in 6 asphodel flowers. Allow the flowers to shrivel up before pouring in 100 mL of the mineral water. Lower the temperature of the flame and allow it to simmer on a very low, gentle heat for 25 hours.

6. Take another Jagannath stone and place it in a beaker. Pour in enough Charon’s Tisane to cover the stone, approximately 250 mL. Leave to sit for 21 days.

Day Two

1. Remove the cauldron from the heat and allow to cool down completely. The belladonna/asphodel/mineral water should be a pale black colour and slightly opaque. It should also be much thicker now, almost gelatinous.

2. Take a Jagannath stone and make sure that it is completely pulverised to dust. ENSURE THAT THERE ARE NO PIECES LEFT; THEY WILL CAUSE TO POTION TO BECOME NOTHING MORE THAN AN EXTREMELY POTENT CRIPPLING POTION AND NOT A POISON. A very effective Crushing charm is the Contero charm.

3. Take the completely pulverised stone and add it into 200 mL of mineral water. Add it in small increments, taking the time to stir it in thoroughly. WARNING: USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN ADDING IN THE CRUSHED STONE. IT REACTS CURIOUSLY WITH THE OTHER ELEMENTS IN THE WATER.

4. Once the crushed Jagannath stone has been stirred in completely, put it aside.

5. Take a myrica and ensure that it is clean. If not, wash it free of dirt and other such things. Once this has been done, peel only the bark off. Once the bark is peeled simply chop it into pieces, regardless of uniformity. A slight secretion should be coming from the chopped pieces. Take them and add them into the container with the mineral water and crushed Jagannath stone.

6. Take the now cooled belladonna/asphodel/mineral water brew and gently pour in the Jagannath stone/myrica/mineral infusion. It should take on a sickly yellowish colour and have a thin and watery consistency. Put aside.

7. Open the sealed container of blood/scarletina/adrenaline. By now it should be a light mossy green colour and have a slight scum on the surface. Scrape off the scum and place in a separate container for later.

8. Take two of the stonewort stalks and shred them finely. Add them to the blood/scarletina/adrenaline brew. Reseal the container again and leave for 24 hours to ferment further.

9. Take 2 diced wilalum roots, 2 mugwort roots that have been chopped into ¼ inch pieces, five Doxy teeth and 1.5 mg of powdered lobelia seeds. Place them all in the mortar and crush thoroughly with the pestle. It will be done when it has a consistent brown colour with white and black flecks in it.

10. Scrape the mortar’s contents into the thick yellow mixture and stir briskly with a counter-clockwise motion. The potion should start bubbling from the ingredients interaction and be issuing copious amounts of steam.

11. Take a piece of willow tree bark and gently drop it into the potion. The bubbling will die down and you should be able to see slight disturbances swirling across the surface. Put it aside to sit and mature for 12 days.

12. At this stage nothing else needs to done for the rest of the week.

Week Two

Day One

1. Draw 160 mL of fresh blood and set to a gentle simmer in a fresh cauldron.

2. Slowly add in half the remaining pieces of willow bark at 10 minute intervals and allow to stew until all the colour has been leeched from them. Remove them from the potion. Allow the potion to continue stewing.

3. Take the stewed willow bark pieces and chop into thin strips. Open the container with the blood/scarletina/adrenaline scum from the first week and sprinkle in evenly before stirring in for two minutes. Recover and let sit again.

4. In a separate beaker, mix, in this precise order, ? (83 mL) wormwood draught, 50 mL of morphine, ¼ (3 ¼) fireweed stalks and all the bile from the Ukrainian Ironbelly. WARNING: ADD THE DRAGON BILE SLOWLY; DRAGON BILE REACTS STRONGLY WITH FIREWEED AND MAY CAUSE AN EXPLOSION. Cover and allow to steep for 72 hours.

5. After 20 minutes of stewing, regardless of the condition, add the 12 spearmint leaves in batches of three with fifteen minutes pauses in between to allow the leaves to infuse the willow bark infused blood. Once this is done, remove the cauldron from the flame and let cool.

6. When the potion is completely cold, add in 2 Doxy teeth, 9 mL of Bundimun goo and half the red clover petals. Stir in thoroughly and place back over flame. Bring to a rapid boil, continually stirring. Leave it to boil for 45 minutes.

7. After 45 minutes, the brew should be thick and condensed down. Pour in 500 mL of mineral water and leave on a low simmer for the next 96 hours.

Day Two

1. Take one of the empty hollow of a kappa’s head and place upright in a clean cauldron. Fill with 100 mL of wormwood draught. Pour in 500 mL of mineral water and bring to a boil. When the hollow turns over, push it down to the bottom of the cauldron with a stirrer and hold it there for thirty seconds. Then boil until all the flesh has fallen away from the bone. WARNING: THE BOILED KAPPA FLESH WILL CAUSE A STINK WORSE THAN AN UNK. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT A STRONG VENTILATION CHARM BE USED; IT WILL HAVE NO ADVERSE EFFECT ON THE POTION.

2. Fish the bone from the brew and leave out for 24 hours to dry on a rack.

3. Continue boiling the kappa flesh brew at a roiling boil. Open the container with the blood/scarletina/adrenaline/willow bark scum mixture. By this point it should be a dark green with bright yellow veins running through it. Scrape this into the kappa flesh brew and turn the flame down to a medium heat.

4. Allow this to boil for 30 minutes. By this point, the brew should be a light grey colour. Take it off the heat and cool down completely. Once it is completely cool, allow it to mature uncovered for 13 days.

Day Three

1. Remove the cover from the wormwood/morphine/fireweed/bile mixture and place under a gentle flame, bringing it to a gradual simmer.

2. Ensure that the kappa hollow bone is fully dry. Crush it to a fine powder and divide into six even portions. Sprinkle into the simmering mixture at hour intervals.

3. Once this is done, simmer for three hours and then remove from heat. Cover back and allow to mature.

Day Five

1. Take the wormwood/morphine/fireweed/bile/kappa hollow mixture and place it back on the burner. Take the cauldron from the first week with the belladonna/asphodel/mineral water/Jagganath stone/myrica/mineral infusion and uncover. It should have a gelatinous appearance and a dark heavily shaded yellow colour.

2. Once the wormwood/morphine/fireweed/bile/kappa hollow mixture has heated up to a roiling boil, take it off the heat and pour it into the gelatinous brew. There should be a particular whistling sound. When it is poured in, take a silver stirrer and stir it vigorously, breaking up the gelatinous chunks and allowing them melt.

3. Once both mixtures are combined, bring to a simmer and stir continuously, counter clockwise.

4. Take 1 crystal beaker and pour in 10 mL of Erumpent Exploding Liquid. Then SLOWLY AND GRADUALLY pour in 12.5 mL of Charon’s Tisane. DO NOT STIR. The mixture should appear to be simmering of its own volition. Once this has stopped, it is safe to stir the mixture gently. Add in 3 Doxy teeth, 3 whole belladonna roots, ½ piece of willow bark, 2 shredded stonewort stalks, and 2 ½ henbane leaves. Stir once, stopper and leave to steep for 12 hours.

5. Take all three lobalung poison sacs and cut open so they lie flat on the work surface. Make shallow crosshatched cuts on both sides. Pour 30 mL Pogrebin saliva between all three lobalung poison sacs. Have one person drizzle on Pogrebin saliva while another rubs it in briskly. Only do this on one side. Once the saliva has been rubbed in, take 14 worth of minced daisy roots and rub them on as well. Leave to sit for 12 hours.

6. Once the 12 hours have elapsed, the lobalung poison sacs should be twice their normal size, having absorbed the Pogrebin saliva and minced daisy roots. Turn them over and crosshatch the other side with a sharp blade.

7. Take a Jagannath stone and crush it to a fine powder again. Take the powder and divide it into three evenly. Rub it onto the untreated side of the lobalung poison sac. It should slowly heat up as it is rubbed in.

8. Once the lobalung poison sacs are prepared, slice two of them up fine and drop them all into the beaker gradually. Stopper it tightly, seal it with an appropriate charm, and shake vigorously. It should turn a bright purple colour and seem fizzy. Leave it stoppered for 14 days.

9. Take the one lobalung poison sac and roll it up as tightly as possible before tying it with the rope made from 20 strands of the Demiguise fur. Leave to ferment.

9. At this stage nothing else needs to be done for the rest of the week.

Week Three

Day One

1. Fish the Jagannath stone from the beaker of Charon’s Tisane. It should have pale golden coloured veins running across the surface. The liquid in the beaker should be a pale red colour. Crush the stone roughly and pour it back into the beaker. Shake briskly for 20 minutes and then set aside. WARNING: ONCE YOU HAVE STARTED SHAKING, DO NO STOP UNTIL THE FULL 20 MINUTES HAVE ELAPSED. HALTING DURING THE SHAKING WILL STOP THE REACTION AND MAKE THE ELIXIR USELESS.

2. Take the rolled up lobalung poison sac and cut it into large chunks before dropping it in the beaker. The potion should melt the flesh down and change to a dark red colour. Leave for 14 days.

3. Take 175 mL of fresh blood and pour into a cauldron. Stir in the asphodel flower, the rest of the wormwood draught (63 mL), the rest of the myrica (3), and 500 mL of mineral water. Allow to stew for 24 hours, stirring occasionally, under low heat. Leave to cool afterwards.

Day Two

1. Take the rest of the henbane leaves (5), the stonewort stalks (4), 3 belladonna roots, 4 Doxy teeth and 8 spearmint leaves and mix them up before adding them to the brew in the cauldron once it is finished it’s 24 hour stewing. Leave the resulting mixture to sit for another 72 hours.

2. After this stage, nothing else need to be done for the week.

Week Four

Day One

1. Draw 260 mL of fresh blood and set to simmering in a cauldron.

2. Take both couckle livers and slice them up before depositing in the simmering blood. Add in the rest of the minced daisy roots (14 daisy roots worth), 60 mL of Pogrebin saliva, 68 scarletina buds and 6 diced wilalum roots. Allow mixture to condense down to a thick syrup and then add in 400 mL of mineral water. Boil for 1 hour.

3. While the blood/couckle liver mixture is boiling, take another cauldron and add in, in this precise order: 225 mL of Charon’s Tisane, 50 mL of morphine, 5 ½ pieces of willow bark, 3 whole belladonna roots, 9 ¾ pieces of fireweed stalks (sliced diagonally) and 4.5 mg of powdered lobelia seeds. Allow to stew for an hour.

4. When both brews are finished, carefully pour the blood/couckle liver mixture into the Tisane/morphine mixture and leave on a low simmer for three hours. Then cover and leave for 24 hours.

5. Take 10 Bowtruckle fingers and chop them up fine, ensuring to leave the last segment of the digit whole. Mix this with: 5 mugwort roots, chopped into ½ inch pieces, 22 ½ stewed skullcap leaves, 14 red clover leaves, 112.5 mL of adrenaline, and 5 strands of Demiguise fur. Cover and leave to stand for 96 hours.

6. Crush the last Jagannath stone into a fine powder and place in the bottom of a cauldron. Repeat the same procedure for the last empty hollow of a kappa head and add with the crushed Jagannath stone. Pour in 50 mL of the Hebredian Black bile, 28 mL of Bundimun goo, 4 mL of wormwood draught, 1 Manticore scorpion stinger and 10 ½ skullcap leaves. Heat gently and leave unstirred over flame for 10 minutes. Then cover and leave to stand for 96 hours.

Day Two

1. Uncover the blood/couckle/Tisane/morphine mixture from the first day of the week and add in the rest of the skullcap leaves (12); stir in briskly and then recover. Leave for 72 hours.

Day Five

1. Take the henbane/stonewort/belladonna/Doxy teeth/spearmint mixture from the second day of the third week and uncover. It should have a slightly matter surface and be a dull black colour. Bring it to a boil gradually.

2. Unstopper the beaker with the lobalung poison sac mixture and, once the mixture in the cauldron is boiling, pour it in quickly. A large burst of flame and steam should burst from the surface and the colour should be dark silvery colour now.

3. Uncover the cauldron with the Jagannath/kappa hollow/dragon bile/Bundimun goo/wormwood/Manticore scorpion stinger/skullcap brew and bring to a boil as well.

4. Uncover the Bowtruckle finger/mugwort/skullcap/red clover leaves/adrenaline/ Demiguise fur mixture and bring to a gentle simmer.

5. Once the Jagannath/kappa hollow/dragon bile/Bundimun goo/wormwood/Manticore scorpion stinger/skullcap brew is boiling, pour off only half if it into the simmering Bowtruckle finger/mugwort/skullcap/red clover leaves/adrenaline/ Demiguise fur mixture and stir briskly. The potion should be a dark purple colour. Bring it to a rapid boil and leave it as so for an hour. The colour should lighten as time passes, and be a pale lavender by the end of the hour.

6. Uncover blood/couckle liver/Tisane/morphine mixture and stir, breaking the skin that has formed on the surface. The skin should be ivory colour, but the underside should be bright red. Take the skin and deposit it on the boiling henbane/stonewort/belladonna/Doxy teeth/spearmint mixture. The potion should now lighten to a dark grey colour. Continue to stir the blood/couckle liver/Tisane/morphine mixture. Boil for an hour.

7. Continue to stir the cold blood/couckle liver/Tisane/morphine mixture and pour it into the Jagannath/kappa hollow/dragon bile/Bundimun goo/wormwood/Manticore scorpion stinger/skullcap brew, transferring the stirrer to the boiling cauldron’s contents. Boil for an hour.

8. Once all three potions are done boiling for the hour, remove them from heat and leave them to cool down completely.

9. Once the Jagannath/kappa hollow/dragon bile/Bundimun goo/wormwood/Manticore scorpion stinger/skullcap/Bowtruckle finger/mugwort/skullcap/red clover leaves/adrenaline/ Demiguise fur mixture is completely cool, pour off half of it into a crystal beaker.

10. Pour all of the blood/couckle liver/Tisane/morphine into the crystal beaker and shake briskly for 5 minutes. It should now be a dull purple colour.

11. Take the blood/couckle liver/Tisane/morphine mixture and pour it into the Jagannath/kappa hollow/dragon bile/Bundimun goo/wormwood/Manticore scorpion stinger/skullcap brew and stir gently. Take the crystal beaker’s contents and pour it into the cauldron, mixing briskly now. The potion should be a dark blue colour.

12. Stop stirring the potion and leave it to sit unattended for four hours.

13. Heat it up to a boil and leave uncovered for six hours. By the end, the potion should have a light colour and be only slightly thicker than water. It will have condensed down greatly to a single vial dose and can easily be bottled.

14. In order to ensure that it stays for as long as possible, seal it with a freshness charm and do not open unnecessarily. It will keep for three weeks, with the potion losing efficacy as the days pass by.
